Detroit Historical Museum – Cool Places to Visit in Detroit #10

Detroit Historical Museum – The Detroit Historical Museum was founded in 1928 by the Detroit Historical Society. The Society was led and formed by Clarence M. Burton in 1921. The Society was actually formed in most part to open the Historical Museum. Burton and a group of colleagues set out to open the museum and in 1928 that became a reality. On November 19, 1928 the “highest museum in the world” opened up. It was first located on the 23rd floor of the Barlum Tower, more popularly known as the Cadillac Tower.

Over 20 years later, the museum found a new home. On the 250th anniversary of Detroit, on July 24th 1951, the museum opened at its new location where it stands today. The big ceremony for Detroit’s anniversary was dedicated to the new museum.
